I've got a TomTom 500 - excellent bit of kit, and the pocketgps POI is good also. Not free any more, but a lot cheaper than TomTom's offering. I think that the TT Rider is functionally similar to the car systems, just waterproof and vibration proof.

If you've got a PDA, I think TomTom software for that is pretty good as well, and you could put the PDA in a map bag on the tank. You probably wouldn't get the voice instructions though, as I think most PDAs only cope with one Bluetooth device at a time (and I doubt you'd want a wired GPS receiver).
