on my scruffy old project track bike that i bought, i found the
steering damper has been rubbing on LHS of tank( with headstock in std pos). although the fixing bush/ o ring on the top yoke seems to have seen better days, it still looks like it runs too close to the tank, any ideas whats the cause?

or more so whats the solution, apart from putting the headstock forward

come to think of it ive seen a few second hand tanks around with marks from where the damper has rubbed !

Isn't there two mounting points for the steering dampener for those bikes with adjustable steering head angle? Might be on the wrong one...

Yes there are two mounting points but you can only use one or the other depending upon the head angle selected iirc.

You can always pull the tank back. There is movement/adjustability in the mounting points.

the damper is on the correct mounting point,

not sure there is enough movement in the mounting points to create a gap rear mounting point clearly limits how far you can kinda pull it back. maybe it will do it, ???

The steering dampers did rub the tank on the early models.My '94 vintage 916 did it.
The later bikes were slightly differant in some way.I think the dampers had revised fixings,.....and was'nt the shape of the tank altered??
(Could be my memory playing tricks....)

Sometimes the front locating "peg" bracket actually bends back allowing the tank to sit to far forward and rub against the s/damper. also make sure the rubber grommet in the front of the air box where the "peg" goes is not worn....
Also consider a later style airbox seal which is much thicker than the earlier models and makes a much better "seat" for the tank to sit on. It also stops loads of crap from being sucked in through the sides of the tank.
