That must mean the second one is mine then John

some great info on that site, and the comparison to the adventure and gs is excellent given that they were also on my shopping list if the new Duke turned out to not be suitable for me.

The more I read the more excited I get.
on;y real concerns now are how high the pillion seat is, and how costly those special tyres will be.

See you guys tomorrow. I've charged my camera so hope there is plenty of 'scenery' to point it at

"The gearbox and final drive ratios have also been optimised to enable the use of a higher-ratio 6th gear. This solution not only enables reduced fuel consumption, but also achieves increased riding comfort by reducing vibration. To give a practical example, if the 1198 reaches its top speed in 6th gear, the Multistrada 1200 is able to reach it in 5th gear and maintain it effortlessly in 6th."

Given just how highly the Dukes are normally geared, this sounds like 6th will be next to useless, and 5th might be too...

Question to you guys who ride bikes with slipper cluteches:

do you get any engine braking, or none at all ?
I rely quite heavily on engine braking at present, which is one of the great strengths of the 996 engine.
I'm wondering if this new slipper clutch might see me needing bucket loads of rear brake instead...

Of course you get engine braking, just like any other clutch.

The slipper only engages at a certain amount of torque - because don't forget that it's correct name is a "backwards torque limiting device", the idea being to stop the back wheel turning over the engine, rather than the other (correct!) way round.

With some slipper clutches you can change this amount of torque, and also the way that it engages by different degrees on the ramp interfaces.

dunno about the gearing as my 1198 is only happy in top at 100+mph so taller wouldn't be much use unless of course the power delivery is changed a lot, hmmmmm

I have worked out the gearing charts-I know, I know, I'm a sad case-anyway the gears are all the same as existing Monster/Multistrada/ST4S with the exception of 6th-which is higher than the Monster/Multistrada, and lower than the ST4S. Since I have been informed-indirectly-by Domenicali himself that the engine with it's new tune will pull happily from 2000rpm in 6th-'like an electric motor' I don't think we have much to worry about. The gearing works out that the bike will do 154 at peak power in 6th and 167 at 10,000 rpm. Personally I don't have any doubt that with 150bhp available it will manage to hit at least 154-if not more.

I have attached the chart if anyone is interested.

John

Thanks for the chart John, and thanks for the info on the slipper clutch Antonye.
So in escence the slipper just stops the bike from being over-revved, correct ?

I've never been to the EICMA show before, and was astounded by the size and number of exhibitors there. Was disappointed that Honda and Yamaha weren't there though.
Anyway, what did i think of the 1200 Multi ?

Gorgeous.
MCN gave it pretty good coverage this week, so I had a reasonable idea of what I would be seeing, but it looks even better in real life.
Sadly we weren't allowed to sit on it (one lady did - sorry I'm not sure of her name - expect the clip to make u-tube shortly though). I got told off for just touching the bike !

Everything looks well thought out.
The S-Sports model comes with carbon bits, and the S-Touring version has panniers, centre stand, & heated grips instead of the carbon. All the bits are going to be available as accessories though so its possible to have both.
I tried to have a chat with the marketing man but as to be expected he was major busy.
there are apparently bigger covers for the panniers which increase capacity by around 20 litres (total I think, not each). There will be taller / wider screen options too.
The bike has a connector in the loom ready to power a satnav, and a couple of accessory sockets back near the seat for powering heated clothing etc.
There is a cubby hole up the front on the right side. Not sure if there is one on the left or if the cover that is there is for the fuses (the guy didn't know and wouldn't open it for me).

The bikes were also showing a couple of varieties of after market cans.
Not sure I'll bother with these as my ST4S is so loud it might make a chance to have a quiet(er) bike for a while
I have some pics, so will try to post them tomorrow (I'm out this evening).

One of the guys I spoke to said production is going to start shortly (i.e. this year) and first bikes should make the dealers in March, though they might be the demonstrators only. He confirmed S models only to start with.

Anyone else who went yesterday care to pass comment on what they saw ?
