Once the cush drive has started backing out, then it really needs replacing. The clicking could well be the outer sleeve catching the hub??
As for getting the nut off, Pauls's right. You'll bust the wrench. Get a breaker bar or better still, run it down to the local tyre bay and get them to run it off with an air gun. Nip it back up and then remove the whole lot at home.
