I never know what gear I'm in... I only figured out after the first season on my Monster that it was a five speeder!
Tried one of those dinky ones that you program based on speed and rpm years ago. They don't work on the track... as you downshift, by the time it's figured out what gear you're in, that info is useless because you're already into the corner.
Yeah counting them is what I do with a gear plan / map which goes along with my braking markers etc. I find them a useful backup tool so you don't downshift into first when you really wanted second. Question is, are they allowed?

I cant see any reason why acu or dd rules would prevent you from using one but personally if youve got time to look at one then youre not going fast enough!
The Rules are written to try and prevent people gaining a performance advantage by spending money on certain go faster bolts ons.
As I can't see a gear indicator improving the performance of the bike then I'm happy to allow them in, especially as some of the Tachos that can be used such as Koso can come with it built in and therefore go unnoticed
