How many miles has that bike done

My 1000ds multi was an insurance write off this summer. I tried to buy the bike off the insurance company but it was not an option I was told. A couple of weeks ago I was contacted by the new owner who was trying to get hold of the keys he had been told when he bought it that a new key was about £15 (as if!!) I told him the bad news which he had already had from a dealer (About £1200 to replace the whole ignition system) I asked him how much he had paid for it and he said £2500 and he was pleased to get such a low mileage (2,000miles on clocks) bike for that price. I then pointed out that the clocks had been changed and the old clocks had just over 36,000 mile on them. He was gutted.
The question is how did he know the mileage if he had no key, someone must have put a key in the ignition to get the mileage, so where had the keys gone, they where all sent to the insurance company before they would pay out. Last week I had a letter from DVLA telling me I had committed an offence by not informing them of disposal of a vehicle and wanted to charge me £55 for the said offence. I phoned them to protest and said that all the paper work and keys had gone to the insurance company turns out they are trying to clamp down on the companies that are not informing DVLA and all I had to do was give them the name of the said company and the fine would be forgotten about.
The implications are not good, the bike was a write off but is now, or soon will be back on the road and the whole history of the bike mileage, crash etc gone.
The clocks have to be replaced on my 620 Multi under warranty because the indicator flasher has packed in. That will be another several thousand mile off the clocks when I start from 0 miles again!! If the clocks are changed the dealers should be able to replicate the mileage on the new clocks when they are fitted. Buying second hand will be a nightmare in a few years time. I know it should be shown in the service history but a low mileage bike can seem a good buy even without a service history
