just tried real player but it says its doesn't have the software elements needed to run...so it goes off and does an automatic update, but it still isn't happy????

Used realplayer before no prblems?

.RAR is a compressed file, like .Zip

WinRAR is probably the best known app to handle them:

You're right and the mistake is mine. I was thinking .ram files. Apologies for any confusion.
