I would get close to 50mpg from my '94' 900ss on a run (fitted with DP pipes and K+N filter). I can get almost the same from my 888 if out on a gentle 'bimble'. 33mpg seems very low. It depends how hard you ride it I suppose.
(I too usually top up the tank after 100mls - but can stretch it farther if need be)
