I'm all misty eyed here but ... There is an ANZAC tradition that the Australian officers used to give the diggers nips of rum before they sent them out of the trenches to their almost certain deaths. On ANZAC day the tradition of a 'gunfire' breakfast was born and has carried on since.

The 'gunfire' breakfast consists of being woken up by automatic gunfire (blanks) at about 4am, partaking in rum and coffee and standing around bullshitting about how hard you are etc ...

ANZAC day meant to soldiers in Aus that on this one day the soldiers were socially accepted and respected and no soldier went home without being absolutely trolleyed! The civilians would buy anyone in uniform a drink to pay their respects to those who gave their lives to defend the freedom of a newly formed nation. I have spent many an ANZAC day absolutely shitfaced (well you start drinking rum at 4am!) and I never made it past 4pm without sleeping at some point.

Ruth, the point of this story is that you just drink when you want, do what you want because life is too short to worry about what other people think. Do what you want and enjoy!
