Our friends had a similar problem when they moved house. They called their ISP to let them know they were moving and they said it would be fine. They moved in and connected up the PC and it worked fine.

A few days later and the connection died and they couldn't get it working. They phoned the ISP, who checked everything and they said it should be working. A couple of tries and calls and the ISP eventually sent out a new modem. They tried this but still no luck!

We went round for dinner one evening and I had a quick look - there was no ADSL carrier signal even though the ISP said it was working fine. I got them to call BT and they ran a test, then confirmed that the ADSL had been switched off. Another call back to the ISP to let them know what BT had said, and they called BT and got it reactivated. (deep breath)

I think it was down to the fact that the previous owners had broadband installed. When they moved out they either cancelled it or moved their service to the new place. The instructions from the two different ISPs must have crossed, and BT ended up pulling the plug on the ADSL on instruction from the former owner!

Luckily he was back online in a couple of days, but again it was the reluctance of the ISP to fully check with BT that held everything up!
